Take the Train, and Book a Guide at the Gate if You Want One
In less than an hour you go from central Naples to a Roman city whose streets, fountains, theatres, bakeries and houses still show daily life before Vesuvius erupted in AD 79. It is one of Italy's most rewarding short train trips. Winter's cooler weather makes the walking more comfortable, but the archaeological park closes earlier and the holidays need some planning. Our choice is the train plus a guide who meets you at Pompeii, such as the two-hour Pompeii tour with an archaeologist and entry ticket.
This page covers the winter timetable and a winter day trip. For cruise-port options and the year-round picture, see our main Pompeii from Naples guide; for the park's winter hours and holiday closures, see Pompeii winter opening hours.
Naples to Pompeii: Quick Comparison
| Method | Route | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Circumvesuviana | Napoli Garibaldi → Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri | Almost all independent first-time visitors |
| Trenitalia + Pompei Link | Napoli Centrale → modern Pompei station → connecting bus | Travellers using Trenitalia or heading for the eastern entrance |
| Organised small-group excursion | Naples meeting point → Pompeii → Naples | Travellers who want the guide and transport arranged, such as the small-group Pompeii tour from Naples with skip-the-line tickets |
| Private car | Door-to-door road transfer | Families, larger groups and travellers with particular needs |
Other Experiences You Might Enjoy
Naples makes a good winter base for more than Pompeii: the compact ruins of Herculaneum, the finds in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, the crater of Mount Vesuvius on a clear day, underground Naples, or a day out to Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast. These are tours and tickets around Pompeii.
The Circumvesuviana from Naples, Step by Step
1. Find Napoli Garibaldi. It connects underneath the Napoli Centrale mainline station, but EAV has its own platforms and ticketing. Follow the signs for EAV/Circumvesuviana, not for a Trenitalia Intercity platform.
2. Take a Sorrento-bound Line L1 train. Several Vesuvian branches leave from Naples, so don't board just because you see the word Pompei. Check that your train calls at Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri.
3. Get off at Pompei Scavi. On EAV's timetable from 17 October 2026, standard services take about 36 minutes from Napoli Garibaldi. The platform can be busy even in winter.
4. Walk to Porta Marina. Follow the signs to the excavations. This western entrance is a few minutes away and handy for the Forum and the major houses.
5. Show your ticket. Official Pompeii tickets carry your name, so keep the PDF and your ID ready. Some guided tours meet outside a nearby café, not at the turnstile.
The New Winter Timetable
EAV brought in a new Naples–Sorrento timetable on 17 October 2026. Trains to Pompei Scavi leave Napoli Garibaldi every 30 minutes, the first at 5:33 AM. These are sample weekday morning departures from the published timetable:
| Leaves Napoli Garibaldi | Arrives Pompei Scavi |
|---|---|
| 7:33 AM | 8:09 AM |
| 8:03 AM | 8:39 AM |
| 8:33 AM | 9:09 AM |
| 9:03 AM | 9:39 AM |
| 9:33 AM | 10:09 AM |
| 10:03 AM | 10:39 AM |
These come from the published timetable. They are not live departures, and holiday services can differ, so check the PDF for your date and leave a buffer if you are meeting a guide. For a winter visit we'd aim for the 8:03 or the 8:33, or another train around then.
What Is the Train Fare?
An ordinary EAV single between Naples and Pompei Scavi costs about €3–4 per adult, so budget roughly €7 for the return. The fares quoted online differ slightly, so check the price at the machine or in the EAV app before you buy. Integrated ticket types can cost a different amount.
EAV's Tap & Go system accepts suitable contactless bank cards at the enabled gates on the Sorrento line. Tap in and tap out with the same card or device: if you miss the exit tap you can be charged the maximum fare. Ordinary trains have no reserved seats and can be crowded with commuters and tour groups.
Is Napoli Porta Nolana better?
Porta Nolana is the first Naples station on the line, one stop before Garibaldi. Boarding there gives you a better chance of a seat, but it isn't worth a long detour just for that. Garibaldi is easier if you are coming from Napoli Centrale or a central hotel.
Campania Express Suspension
Campania Express, EAV's tourist train, was reported suspended from 1 October 2026 until further notice. Older blog posts and guidebooks still describe it. Check EAV before you travel, and unless EAV announces that it has resumed, plan on the regular Circumvesuviana.
Trenitalia plus Pompei Link
Trenitalia regional trains stop at Pompei, the modern town's station, not at the EAV station Pompei Scavi. Trenitalia's Pompei Link combines a regional train with a connecting bus from the town station to the archaeological area. It suits you if you are travelling on the mainline network or want to arrive nearer the eastern side of the site.
Enter Pompei Scavi as the destination for the combined train and bus in Trenitalia's booking channel, and check that a suitable bus connection exists. The bus supplement is on top of the regional train ticket; check the current fare and schedule with Trenitalia. Don't confuse the modern Pompei town station with the archaeological entrance when you arrange a meeting point with a guide.
What a DIY Day Trip Costs
For one full-paying adult, an independent day looks like this:
| Item | Indicative adult cost |
|---|---|
| EAV train, Naples to Pompeii | about €3–4 |
| EAV train back | about €3–4 |
| Pompeii Express ticket | €20.00 |
| Basic DIY visit | about €26–28 |
| Optional official 90-minute thematic tour | +€8.00 |
| Optional official audio device | +€9.00 |
That leaves out getting around Naples, meals, other fees and any ticket discounts. With the park's own scheduled guided tour added, the train, the Express ticket and the guide come to about €35 per adult, which is very good value on days the tour runs. Our Pompeii tour cost guide compares what commercial tours charge.
Which Pompeii Ticket?
Express (€20) covers the main city: the Forum, baths, theatres, houses and streets. It is enough for most first-time visitors planning three or four hours.
Plus (€25) adds the Villa of the Mysteries and the other listed suburban sites. Choose it for a longer visit focused on the frescoes; in winter, entry to the suburban route through Porta Ercolano stops at 3:30 PM. An ordinary ticket is single-use, so you can't leave the park for lunch and come back in.
Buy admission through the official ticket portal. Tickets carry your name, and the rules on changing the date or getting a refund are strict, which matters if the winter forecast looks uncertain. Pompeii tickets explained covers every ticket type.
Our Favourite Naples-to-Pompeii Winter Itinerary
| Time | What you do |
|---|---|
| 8:15 AM | Reach Napoli Garibaldi, find the EAV platforms and get the right ticket. |
| 8:33 AM | Take a Sorrento-bound train; on the published timetable it reaches Pompei Scavi at 9:09 AM. |
| 9:20 AM | Walk to Porta Marina and start sightseeing. |
| 9:30–10:00 AM | The Forum, the Temple of Apollo and the main civic buildings. |
| 10:00–11:00 AM | Major houses such as the House of the Faun and the House of the Vettii, if open. |
| 11:00 AM–noon | The baths, streets and shopfronts. Look out for the stepping stones and the ancient fountains. |
| Noon–1:00 PM | The theatre district or the Antiquarium, then a late lunch or the train back to Naples. |
Come back on a train heading for Naples, and check the day's timetable before relying on one particular afternoon departure. Pompeii closes at 5:00 PM in winter, so an early start leaves you plenty of slack.
When a Guided Excursion from Naples Makes Sense
An organised tour makes sense if you want transport, admission and a guide in one booking, don't want to find your way round unfamiliar platforms, or have only half a day. It can also help families and travellers with particular needs. Bear in mind that the advertised length includes the travel: a three-to-four-hour package may give you only two hours at Pompeii.
Before you book, check: train or road transport? The exact meeting point in Naples? Is admission included? A live guide or audio commentary? The maximum group size? How long inside Pompeii? Can you stay on after the guide leaves? What happens if rain or a closure affects the day?
Tours to compare (check winter availability and the option you select):
- Half-day guided excursion from Naples: the Pompeii guided day trip with fast-track entry from Naples, 4.5/5 from 5,522 reviews, from $53, 3.5 hours with coach transport. The two-hour visit is led by a licensed archaeology expert only when the minimum group size is reached; otherwise you get an audio guide.
- Small-group Pompeii with transport and admission: the small-group Pompeii tour from Naples with skip-the-line tickets, 4.8/5 from 1,377 reviews, from $70, with a two-hour guided visit and pickup and drop-off in Naples.
- Archaeologist-led tour starting at Pompeii: the two-hour Pompeii tour with an archaeologist and entry ticket, 4.8/5 from more than 24,000 reviews, from $34. For a smaller group, the Pompeii exclusive tour with an archaeologist and entry tickets is 4.9/5 from 848 reviews, from $49.
Our choice: the train plus a guide who meets you at Pompeii. You keep the cheap transport and can carry on exploring on your own afterwards, within the ticket rules.
Pompeii: Entry Ticket and Guided Tour with an Archaeologist
You meet the group at the entrance, so it is easy to combine with a morning train from Naples; choose a start time that leaves a buffer after your train. Askos Tours includes the Express entry ticket and skips the ticket line, and groups are capped at 20, with headsets for groups of 10 or more. When the two hours are up you are already inside, free to keep exploring within the ticket rules. Transport and food are not included.

The Return Journey: Practical Tips
Use Pompei Scavi for direct EAV trains back to Napoli Garibaldi or Porta Nolana. Trains run regularly on the published timetable, but holiday timetables and disruption notices can change them. Save the timetable before you go in, and allow time to walk back to the right station.
The five-hour official route through the site can end at Piazza Anfiteatro, the eastern exit, a long way from Pompei Scavi. If you plan to cross the city one way, arrange your return or allow for the extra walk. It is easy to forget when you started beside Porta Marina.
Winter Weather and Public Holidays
Ordinary rain doesn't close Pompeii, but wet Roman paving is slippery. In heavy, steady rain, choose another day if you can. The National Archaeological Museum of Naples is an excellent indoor alternative and holds many of the best finds from Pompeii and Herculaneum; an archaeologist-led small-group tour of the museum is sold on Viator. Our Pompeii in the rain page has more wet-day advice.
Check train times and park hours separately around 24–26 December, 31 December, New Year's Day and Epiphany. Pompeii normally lists 25 December and 1 January as closed, subject to special announcements. Entry is normally free on the first Sunday of each month, with a different entry procedure, and those days can be busier.
Families and Accessibility
Children often enjoy the stepping stones in the streets, the bakery counters and the theatres, but keep the visit focused. A two-hour guided introduction can work better than an exhausting all-day plan. Under-18s often qualify for free admission to the archaeological park, although a commercial guide may still cost extra.
The park has a dedicated Pompeii for All route from Piazza Anfiteatro, but the site as a whole is not step-free. If you need accessible transport, check the EAV service, the stations and the guided route in advance; a private tour does not guarantee accessibility.
Bags larger than 30 × 30 × 15 cm are not allowed inside the archaeological park, and paid storage is available at designated entrances. On a day trip, leave suitcases at your Naples accommodation if you can.
Naples to Pompeii in Winter: Common Questions
How long is Naples to Pompeii by train?
About 36 minutes from Napoli Garibaldi to Pompei Scavi on EAV's Line L1 timetable from 17 October 2026.
Which station is best for Pompeii?
Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri on the Circumvesuviana, a few minutes' walk from the Porta Marina entrance.
Is Pompei Scavi the same as Pompei station?
No. Pompei Scavi is the EAV station by the ruins; Pompei is the modern town's Trenitalia station.
Does Campania Express run in winter 2026?
It was reported suspended from 1 October 2026 until further notice. Check EAV before you travel, and plan on the regular Circumvesuviana.
Can I visit independently?
Yes. Buy your admission directly, take the commuter train and use the official map.
Is a tour worth it?
Often, for the history a guide explains. Transport is optional if you're comfortable on the EAV train.
What time should I leave Naples?
A train between about 8:00 and 8:30 AM gives you a full winter visit before the 3:30 PM last entry.
Is the train safe?
It is an ordinary commuter service. Take the usual city-transport precautions and keep valuables secure.
Take the Circumvesuviana if Local Trains Suit You
Pompeii is too close and too easy to reach to need an expensive transfer for most travellers. If you're comfortable on local trains, take the Circumvesuviana and spend the savings on a good archaeologist guide. Start early enough for the short winter day, and check both your outward and return trains. For a second day out from Naples, compare Pompeii and Herculaneum in winter.
