Arrive by 10:00 AM and Allow Three to Four Hours
Winter visitors mostly get caught out by the details: the famous houses close before the park does, the Villa of the Mysteries has an earlier cutoff on its access route, and the first Sunday of each month works on free-entry rules instead of the usual booking system. If you want the ticket and the explanation in one booking, the Entry Ticket and Guided Tour with an Archaeologist includes Express admission and two hours with a guide.
Here is what to know before you pay for a ticket or set off from Naples or Sorrento. For the weather, crowds and what a winter day feels like, see our Pompeii in winter guide.
The Winter Timetable at a Glance
| Period | Opens | Last park admission | Closes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 Oct–15 Mar | 9:00 AM | 3:30 PM | 5:00 PM |
| 16 Mar–14 Oct | 9:00 AM | 5:30 PM | 7:00 PM |
The main archaeological park has no regular weekly closing day. Individual buildings, and some of the other sites in the Greater Pompeii network, keep their own schedules: several of the outlying sites close on Tuesdays.
Last admission does not buy you an hour and a half with everything open. The park is large, and the main houses take their last visitors at 4:00 PM and close at about 4:20 PM. On a first visit, aim to enter around 9:00 or 10:00 AM and allow three to four hours.
Other Experiences You Might Enjoy
A winter morning at Pompeii leaves the afternoon free for the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, home to many of the site's frescoes and mosaics, the smaller excavations at Herculaneum, a Mount Vesuvius crater walk on a clear day, or an evening in Naples or Sorrento. These are tours and tickets around Pompeii.
The Winter Closing-Time Traps
Several of the best interiors, including the House of the Vettii, the House of Menander, the Lupanar, the Forum Baths, the Stabian Baths, the Antiquarium and the Large Palaestra, list winter hours of 9:15 AM to 4:20 PM, with last entry at 4:00 PM. Any building can also close on the day for maintenance, conservation work or staff shortages.
The Villa of the Mysteries needs more planning. Entry to the suburban villas route through Porta Ercolano stops at 3:30 PM in winter. The villa itself is listed until 4:30 PM, with last entry at 4:15 PM, but that only helps if you are already on the route, so you cannot start the walk out to it near 4:00 PM. Visit the villa before the last part of your day.
The park keeps the current list of open buildings and their hours on its open buildings page. Our House of the Vettii guide covers the most visited of them.
Christmas and New Year: the 2026–2027 Calendar
| Date | What to expect |
|---|---|
| 1 Nov 2026 | First Sunday and All Saints' Day; normal free-entry arrangements |
| 6 Dec 2026 | First-Sunday free entry |
| 8 Dec 2026 | Immaculate Conception; normally open |
| 24 Dec 2026 | Christmas Eve; normally open, check for special hours |
| 25 Dec 2026 | Normally closed; a special opening is possible |
| 26 Dec 2026 | St Stephen's Day; normally open |
| 31 Dec 2026 | New Year's Eve; normally open, check for special hours |
| 1 Jan 2027 | Normally closed; a special opening is possible |
| 3 Jan 2027 | First-Sunday free entry |
| 6 Jan 2027 | Epiphany; normally open |
| 7 Feb 2027 | First-Sunday free entry |
| 7 Mar 2027 | First-Sunday free entry |
A usual closing day is not a final announcement. The park lists 25 December and 1 January as closed "unless otherwise communicated", and it has opened specially at Christmas and New Year in previous years. Recheck the official notices shortly before you travel, and don't assume last year's holiday hours will repeat.
On public holidays, trains and buses may run reduced timetables whether or not Pompeii opens. A morning visit gives you the biggest margin for a late train.
What Happens on Free Sundays?
Pompeii normally takes part in Italy's Domenica al Museo scheme on the first Sunday of every month. You can't book or buy the free ticket online in the usual way: you walk straight to the turnstiles, subject to the park's crowd measures and its daily cap of 20,000 visitors.
Free doesn't mean quiet, and these Sundays can draw extra visitors. A professional guide or transport isn't free just because admission is, so check what a commercial excursion charges on that day. The first Sunday of January 2027 is 3 January, not New Year's Day.
Pompeii Tickets: Which One to Buy?
| Official ticket | Full adult price | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Pompeii Express | €20 | The main ancient city only |
| Pompeii Plus | €25 | The main city plus the suburban villas, Villa Regina and the Antiquarium at Boscoreale, and the shuttle |
| Grande Pompei (Greater Pompeii) 3-day ticket | €30 | Pompeii Plus plus Oplontis, Villa Arianna, Villa San Marco and the Stabiae museum, one entry per site |
| MyPompeii annual pass | €45 | All the park's sites for a year, under the pass conditions |
| Official thematic guided tour | €8 extra | A scheduled introduction of about 90 minutes; free for children under 10 |
| Official audio guide | €9 extra | A recorded self-guided commentary (€14 for two) |
Choose Express if you want a few hours among the Forum, the streets, houses, baths, theatres and the Amphitheatre. The main city alone is big enough to fill a whole day.
Choose Plus if the Villa of the Mysteries and its frescoes are a priority, and you have the time and energy for the longer walk. Buying Plus only because it sounds more complete can waste money on a short visit.
The park currently sells an €8 card-only upgrade from Express to the suburban villas route, at the start of the route by Porta Ercolano. Express (€20) plus the upgrade (€8) comes to €28, against €25 for Plus bought at the start. If you already know you want the villas, Plus is cheaper.
Choose the three-day Grande Pompei ticket if you also want Oplontis, Stabiae and the other sites in the Greater Pompeii network. Three days of validity does not mean three entries to Pompeii itself, and ordinary admission to Herculaneum is not included.
The official thematic tours, Civic Pompeii and Daily Pompeii, are the cheapest way to add a guide; our Pompeii winter guided tours page compares them with commercial tours. For every ticket type in more detail, see Pompeii tickets explained.
Discounts and Free Admission
Under the Italian rules for state sites, visitors under 18 normally get in free, with identification or the park's ticketing procedure. EU citizens aged 18 to 24 pay a reduced €2, and some non-EU visitors who hold an Italian residence permit for the reasons the official regulations list may also qualify.
A free or reduced admission doesn't usually extend to commercial guides, transport, audio guides or special experiences. Families should compare the full checkout total for a tour package instead of assuming an under-18 costs nothing.
How Official Booking Works
Buy from the authorised Pompeii Vivaticket portal or at the official ticket offices, which are inside the site at the Porta Marina, Piazza Esedra and Piazza Anfiteatro entrances.
- Choose your date and ticket type.
- Enter each visitor's name correctly.
- Pay and keep the official ticket PDF.
- Bring identification that matches the name on the ticket.
- Save the PDF offline or print it.
- Go to your chosen entrance. Booking ahead saves buying at the window, but you still go through the entry checks.
Ordinary tickets carry your name. Under the current rules they generally can't be transferred, moved to another day or refunded, except in specific cases such as an extraordinary closure. Rain on a day the park stays open normally doesn't entitle you to a refund, so if your winter plans are flexible, choose the date with care.
Should You Pay for Skip-the-Line?
An official ticket bought in advance already means you don't queue at the ticket window. Commercial products labelled skip-the-line usually bundle pre-booked entry with something else, such as the Pompeii entry ticket with an audio guide (4.1/5 from more than 13,500 reviews, from $39), and you may still face security or identity checks.
Book a guide if you want the history explained; you don't need one to get in. If you only want admission, start with the official ticket. If you want expert context, compare guided tours on the guide's quality, the group cap, the length and which admission ticket is included.
Pompeii: Entry Ticket and Guided Tour with an Archaeologist
Express admission plus two hours with an archaeologist, in groups of up to 20 with headsets for the larger ones. A morning start covers the Forum and the main streets while the houses are still open, and you can carry on alone before the 3:30 PM last entry matters. Our archaeologist tour review covers what the two hours include.

What Time Should You Arrive?
| Arrival | Our view |
|---|---|
| 9:00–10:00 AM | Excellent: the full sightseeing window |
| 11:00 AM | Good for a three-to-four-hour visit |
| Noon | Manageable for a focused visit |
| 1:00 PM | A shorter visit; stick to the highlights |
| 2:00 PM | A rushed first visit |
| 3:00–3:30 PM | Very little useful time |
We wouldn't aim for the last admission on purpose. The ticket costs the same late in the day, and some of the best houses will already be close to their 4:00 PM cutoff.
Entrances and Return Travel
Porta Marina is the handiest entrance if you arrive at Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri on the EAV Circumvesuviana, and it suits the western highlights and the Forum.
Piazza Esedra is the entrance to use if you want to start with the Antiquarium, Pompeii's museum and archaeological display space.
Piazza Anfiteatro serves the eastern city, including the Amphitheatre, and is the start of the step-free Pompeii for All route.
Don't confuse the EAV stop Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri with Trenitalia's modern Pompei station. From Naples or Sorrento, the direct Circumvesuviana is usually the simplest way to the western entrances; from Salerno, Trenitalia's Pompei Link may suit you better. If you'd rather not deal with the trains, the Naples tour of Pompeii with ticket, guide and transfer (4.7/5 from 2,853 reviews, from $53) and the Sorrento Pompeii Express tour by train (4.8/5 from 2,903 reviews, from $58) handle the journey. Our Pompeii from Naples guide covers the train in detail.
Lunch, Luggage and Leaving the Park
Standard tickets are valid for one entry, so you can't leave for lunch and come back on the same ticket. Plan food and breaks at the visitor facilities inside, or eat when you finish. Casina dell'Aquila has offered refreshments; check the current arrangements before relying on a particular café.
Bags, backpacks and cases larger than 30 × 30 × 15 cm are not allowed into the excavations. Paid luggage storage is available at the Porta Marina and Piazza Anfiteatro entrances. If you're moving between Naples and Sorrento, leave your suitcases at your accommodation instead of bringing them into a busy sightseeing day.
Pompeii Winter Hours: Common Questions
What time does Pompeii open in December?
At 9:00 AM under the regular winter timetable. It closes at 5:00 PM, with last entry at 3:30 PM.
Is Pompeii open on Mondays?
Yes, normally. The main park has no regular Monday closure.
Does Pompeii open on 25 December?
It is one of the park's usual closure dates, unless the park announces an exception.
Will Pompeii open on 1 January 2027?
It is normally listed as closed, although the park can announce a special holiday opening.
Is Pompeii free on the first Sunday?
Normally yes. You can't book a free ticket online; you go straight to the turnstiles, within the daily cap of 20,000 visitors.
Can I buy tickets at the gate?
Yes, at the official ticket offices at Porta Marina, Piazza Esedra and Piazza Anfiteatro, subject to capacity on the day. Booking ahead is more convenient.
Does Express include the Villa of the Mysteries?
No. You need Pompeii Plus, or the €8 card-only upgrade sold at Porta Ercolano.
Can I use a three-day ticket three times at Pompeii?
No. It gives one entry to each included site within the three days.
Can I change a ticket if the forecast changes?
Generally not. Ordinary named tickets can't be moved to another day under the current rules.
Does a guide include tickets?
Sometimes, but not always. Check exactly what the package includes before you pay.
Buy Express, Arrive Early, Check the Holidays
For most first-time winter visitors, the best plan is Pompeii Express, an arrival around 9:00 to 10:00 AM and three to four hours inside. Choose Plus only if you mean to walk out to the suburban villas, and check the park's notices for Christmas, New Year and free Sundays before you travel. The small details, the 4:00 PM house cutoffs, the named tickets and the right entrance, matter more than an expensive generic skip-the-line package.
